10 NYE Activities At Home

New Years Eve Hourly Activity Countdown

Starting at 6 pm on New Year's Eve night we do an activity balloon pop countdown. We pop one balloon on the hour and inside is a paper with an activity written on it.

This is SO fun and keeps us entertained throughout the night so that we all can stay awake to ring in the new year-- because I need something to keep me awake!😆

I print out the activities on strips of paper found here:

Then I roll each one up and put it inside the balloon before blowing it up. I tape one balloon for every hour until midnight up on the door or wall. You can also tape them to a string and tie the string or tape it to a door.

Then you are ready to celebrate the New Year and have a lot of fun doing it!

Here are the activities we love:

1. Time Capsule: I love asking my kids questions about their year, future, and current likes/dislikes. My favorite about this is reading their time capsules from the year prior! It's always fun to see the change and what they said the year before. We save all of these in a folder on our computer and back them up to an external hard drive so we don't lose them.

2. Fondue hour: We usually eat Chinese takeout for dinner so for dessert around 7 or 8 pm I thought it would be fun to do a fondue dessert hour! Some of our favorite things to dip are: strawberries, pineapple, apples, bananas, marshmallows, or little bite size rice krispie pieces.

3. Grandparent phone call: We love calling each set of grandparents before it gets too late (usually around 9 pm) in case they head to bed early. You can ask them about their day, or have a grandparent questionnaire ready to find out their favorite things! You can even ask them about their goals and dreams for the next year.

4. Scavenger hunt: The kids always love a good scavenger hunt. Here is one I made that you can do as teams or individual and see who finds all of the items first!

5. Minute to win it games: We LOVE minute to win it games. I found a bunch of fun ones you can do here:

6. Karaoke hour: bring out a microphone, if you have it, and sing the hour away! We love following karaoke versions of songs on YouTube.

7. Bingo: a good old game of bingo is always fun. Find my free printable here:

8. Charades: This is another family favorite of ours. You can switch it up a little and do reverse charades where everyone acts and only ONE person guesses-- it leads to some pretty comical moments when everyone tries working together without talking! Find a list of charade acts here:

Charades for Kids

9. Glow stick dance off: tape some glow sticks to your arms, legs, and stomach/chest to create a stick man figure and dance in the dark! This is such a fun activity, the kids love it!

10. Pinata: I always make pinatas, they are easier than it seems! I think this was the kids favorite as they busted open the pinata filled with goodies and prizes and rang in the New Year. Find a DIY pinata tutorial here:

I hope some of these ideas make it into your home and fills it with fun and laughter! Happy New Year!
